Rock Opposes Governor’s Proposal to Reduce Community-Based Funding for Mental Retardation Programs
Representative Todd Rock (R-Franklin) issued the following statement today regarding Gov. Ed Rendell’s 2010-11 budget proposal that significantly reduces funding for community-based waiver programs benefitting individuals with mental retardation.
“As the prime sponsor for legislation to constitutionally limit state government spending (House Bill 1100), I am 100 percent in favor of cutting excessive state spending rather than increasing taxes. While these are tough economic times, I will continue the fight to protect absolutely essential community-based waiver programs for children and adults with mental retardation.
“Just like last year, there is no question that there will be many difficult cuts that must be made to balance the ever-increasing Rendell budget deficit. Despite this growing deficit and a dramatic decrease in state revenues, the governor is once again proposing a $1.29 billion spending increase. Clearly, there are many other line items in the governor’s $29 billion budget that can and must be reduced, rather than cutting funding that directly affects the quality of life for Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable citizens.”
